History

BC Platforms was founded in 1997 and currently serves a wide international customer base in 18 countries. Our customers consist of top-tier research groups, international cohort studies, biobanks and major pharmaceutical companies collecting and analyzing genotype and phenotype data. The company headquarters are located in Basel.

We are collaborating with other actors in the field, such as analysis program developers, genotyping device manufacturers and hardware vendors. Thanks to these partnerships and our long-term customer relationships, we can offer unique expertise in genetic and clinical data management and analysis, regardless of the scope of the work.

In the life sciences sector, predictive medicine and healthcare is quickly becoming a reality. Mark Bidwell
Chairman of the Board since July 2015

Mark Bidwell (b. 1967) has extensive experience catalyzing and driving change in market-leading companies such as BP Oil and the Hay Group, and most recently in Syngenta, where he led the creation and development of a global $2bn Specialty Crops business unit. He has a proven track record building teams that have developed new business models in mature, regulated markets, both creating the conditions for innovation and driving profitable growth.

He is experienced in M&A and partnering, development, launch and ramp up of global brands, is an experienced business developer with a track record of designing and executing innovative and sustainable solutions to pressing customer problems.

An intrapreneur turned entrepreneur, he now runs his own business, and is an active advisor to boards and executive teams.

Mr. Bidwell holds a M.A. degree in International Relations and Social Anthropology.

Erich Platzer
Member of the Board since July 2015

Dr. Platzer (b. 1950) is active since 2010 as a Business Angel, and on the boards of Swiss angel groups, StartAngels and BioBAC. Since 2001 to mid 2015, he was an Investment Advisor and co-founder of Venture Capital company, HBM BioVentures, now named HBM Healthcare Investments. In those capacities, Dr. Platzer held multiple board roles including chairman in various biotech and medtech companies, public or private, US or Europe.

Prior to that, Dr. Platzer has 10 years of experience in product development and marketing at Roche, last as therapeutic area head business oncology, responsible for various strategic corporate partnerships.

Dr. Platzer also has 12 years of experience in academic medicine and research; he is a founding member of the team at MSKCC that purified human G-CSF in 1983 (recombinant form: Neupogen®).

Dr. Platzer holds an M.D. and an M.D. PhD degree from the University of Erlangen.

Hannu Vaajoensuu
Member of the Board since January 2014

Hannu Vaajoensuu (b. 1961) is one of the co-founders and the chairman of the board of directors of the of the publicly listed software company Basware Corporation, a position he has held since 2005. He has also been a member of the board since 1990.

Basware Corporation, specialized in automating financial and procurement processes, is one of the most successful Finnish software companies. Mr. Vaajoensuu acted as chief executive officer of the company from 1999 to 2004. He worked as executive director from 1991 to 1999 and held consulting positions at the company from 1987 to 1991.

Mr. Vaajoensuu has been the chairman of the board of directors of Solita, Havacment and a board member of Comptel Oyj (vice chairman), Fenno Kvantum Oy, Inventure Oy, Movenium and Profit Software Oy, among others.

Mr. Vaajoensuu holds a M.Sc. degree in Economics.

Tero Silvola
Member of the Board and CEO since October 2013

Tero Silvola (b. 1971) is the chairman of the board of BCB Medical Oy, chairman of the board of Thermidas Oy and a board member of Bone Index Oy. He is the owner of Riverpark Oy, an investment and development company co-operating with five IT and healthcare start-ups.

Mr. Silvola is a founder of Mawell Oy Ltd, a software enterprise that was one of the fastest growing health care IT companies in Scandinavia from 2001 to 2010. The company, one of the eHealth pioneers, grew under Mr. Silvola’s leadership from a small firm with large plans, to a company with a large international customer base and over 160 employees at offices in Oulu, Helsinki, Stockholm, Göteborg, and London.

Jari Heikkinen
Member of the Board since September 2015

Jari Heikkinen (b. 1965) is CEO and the main owner of Modirum.

Modirum is the leading global vendor providing payment card authentication software and services. Over 1000 banks in over 50 countries use Modirum software to process over 500 million transactions annually. Mr. Heikkinen has been CEO of the company since 2001.

CEO

Tero Silvola (b. 1971) has a background in the international business development, sales and marketing operations. During his career Tero has had a high premium on building and establishing new business opportunities in both large as well as the start-up enterprises. He is the owner of Riverpark Oy, an investment and development company co-operating with five IT and healthcare start-ups.

Mr. Silvola is a founder of Mawell Oy Ltd, a software enterprise that was one of the fastest growing health care IT companies in Scandinavia from 2001 to 2010. Prior to joining BC Platforms, Mr. Silvola has also worked as CEO of Lääkärikeskus Group, one of the biggest and most well known healthcare services providers in Finland and at Nokia.

Mr. Silvola holds a M.Sc. degree in Economics.

Nino da Silva
Executive Vice President, Sales & Marketing

Nino da Silva (b. 1971) is a member of the board of directors of BCB Medical Oy, HLM Ab and Gourmetgruppen Sverige Ab. Mr. da Silva is an entrepreneur and business executive with extensive experience in the field of medical IT and informatics. He has proven expertise in international sales and brand building, as well as internationalization of products and concepts.

During the last 20 years, Mr. da Silva has worked with several global medical technology and software companies such as Mitra, Agfa Healthcare, GE Healthcare, Siemens Healthcare and Philips Healthcare. In 2005 Mr. da Silva was appointed the CEO of eCare, a Swedish R&D company in the field of medical informatics and health care decision support systems.

Mr. da Silva studied medical technology, as well as marketing and economics. He is a co-author on several scientific abstracts and articles published in journals and congresses over the years.

Timo Kanninen
Chief Architect, Co-founder

Timo Kanninen (b. 1968) is CTO and co-founder of Biocomputing Platforms Ltd Oy. He is the visionary behind BC Platforms’ data management systems. He has long-term experience in software development, genetic epidemiology, statistical genetics, and clinical statistics. Mr. Kanninen has also worked with hospital and occupational health IT systems.

Mr. Kanninen is the founder and CEO/CTO of Statwell Oy (1990‐2002). The company provided statistical consultation and developed software for data collection and statistical analyses of personnel and occupational health questionnaires. The company was merged into BC Platforms in 2002.

Mr. Kanninen studied information technology in production and statistics. He is a co-author on 16 scientific articles published in high-level journals.

Anni Ahonen-Bishopp
CTO

Anni-Ahonen-Bishopp (b. 1971) has held several positions at BC Platforms before being appointed as CTO. She first worked as a science expert, and later as a project manager and team leader. Ms. Ahonen-Bishopp has extensive experience in science communications, software design, product development and management of both large customer projects and international, cross­disciplinary collaboration projects.

Prior to joining BC Platforms Ms. Ahonen-Bishopp was a hobbyist programmer working for her PhD. Her doctoral dissertation was about the modulation of growth factor activity in brain. After 10 years in a biochemistry lab, she joined BC Platforms in 2006 to combine her expertise in biosciences with her knowledge of IT and software in laboratories.

Ms. Ahonen-Bishopp holds a Ph.D degree in molecular neurobiology from the University of Helsinki.

Anna Wozniak
CFO

Anna Wozniak (b. 1983) brings many years of experience in financial management, corporate strategy and M&A. Prior to joining BC Platforms, Anna held various positions within finance at Syngenta with the most recent assignment as the finance director for the multi-billion dollar Global Vegetables and Specialty Crops business. Before that she held the role of a finance lead for global innovations, where she drove from a finance perspective from paper to scale up several business programs. Ms. Wozniak brings broad financial management expertise as well as hands-on cross-functional implementation skills.

Ms. Wozniak holds a M.Sc. degree in International Economics (Poznan University of Economics) and Finance (ESCP Europe).

Anita Eliasson
COO, Co-founder

Anita Eliasson (b. 1968) is COO and co-founder of Biocomputing Platforms Ltd Oy. At BC Platforms, she has held several different positions, including marketing and sales, budgeting and finances, and product management.

Ms. Eliasson is an experienced entrepreneur and business manager, with expertise in the set-up and management of ICT companies. She acted as chief executive officer and sales and marketing director at Statwell from 1995 to 2002.

Ms. Eliasson holds a M.Sc. degree in Economics and Business Administration.

Software Engineer

skilled in Java and Web development to join our R&D team in Espoo. Finland. The successful candidate will be able to work in an agile development team, applying quality assurance processes to the development work.

Responsibilities

  • Full lifecycle software development for laboratory and clinical information management systems
  • Apply BC Platforms’ QA procedures to design and development work
  • Produce specifications and determine operational feasibility
  • Integrate software components into BC Platforms’ data management platform
  • Document and maintain software functionality
  • Participate as subject matter expert in customer project communications and executions
  • Comply with project plans and industry standards

Requirements

  • Proven working experience in software engineering and design
  • Excellent understanding of and skills in Java programming language

Software Integration Engineer

to join our R&D team in Espoo, Finland. The work is to design and develop integration interfaces between BC Platforms’ data management modules, and with external data sources and information management solutions. The main goals of the development projects include efficient and testable interfaces for easy API creation, and application of BC Platforms’ QA procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Design and create testable and efficient code at integration interfaces
  • Participate as an expert in integration-project design processes
  • Apply BC Platforms’ QA process to the full software development life cycle
  • Create and maintain feature documentation for interfaces
  • Provide expert advice for team management for decision making purposes
  • Participate as a subject expert in communications with customers

Requirements

  • Proven history in hands-on software development
  • Experience in data source integration and so called Big Data technologies
  • Excellent understanding of and skills in C and Java programming languages
